Suddenly, I can’t imagine my house without a Nest”

The Wall Street Journal

The well-known “Smart” thermostat claims to save you money, but does it live up to all the hype?

We’ve talked about the Nest before in our March post, Kyle’s Nest Report, but now we’re back to talk through the science.

There have been a number of articles and studies about the beloved Nest Thermostat, all designed to prove definitively if the latest energy-trend is actually worth it.

The first question you have to answer: How is it different than the competition?

Often referred to as the iPhone of Thermostats, the Nest saves you energy first and foremost by “learning” your schedule.

Your Nest remembers you turn on the heat when you wake up at 8 am and blast the AC at 5 pm when you get home from work.

It takes these “trends” in your energy consumption and creates an energy plan.

You can wake up to warmth instead of cold floors, and come home to a nice cool living room, all while saving energy. How is that possible?

As the Nest learns when you like the Heater or AC on, so it learns when you’ve left it off.

“If you are the kind of person that forgets to turn a conventional thermostat down when you leave the house, Nest will remember for you.” (Source)

Homeowners who fell into this category had “an estimated average savings of $131 to $145 a year.”

This translated to as much as 30% of their previous heating costs. And it’s not just single-family homes, folks.

Manufactured homes had the highest savings of any home type, almost twice as much as the overall study average. (Source)

If you don’t fall into this energy-forgetful group of homeowners, fear not.

The ever-prepared Nest challenges its users through the infamous Leaf, which symbolizes energy efficiency.

You can earn a Leaf by keeping within your scheduled use and utilizing energy efficient temperatures.

The Leaf also challenges homeowners to use less energy over time by sending you monthly reports on your total hours of HVAC use.

Customers who claimed they were energy efficient before installing a Nest report saving $5-10 each month, just by looking out for the Leaf. (Source)

Bottom line, the less energy-conscious you’ve been in the past, the more Nest will save you now, and the quicker it will pay for itself.

However, as a proven money-saver, the Nest Thermostat is a worthwhile investment for all energy-conscious property owners.
