Leaky Air Conditioner? Here’s What to Do!

The Sacramento Summer Heat Is Back… Is Your Air Conditioner Leaky, Yet? Here’s What to Do From California Energy Services in El Dorado Hills

Summer is heating up here in El Dorado Hills, and many homeowners in the area are already running their ACs at full blast.

While there are a number of issues that can result from a lack of AC maintenance, one of the most common problems we hear about here at California Energy Services is that of leaky air conditioners.

If your air conditioner is leaking, it’s likely a sign that you have a problem on your hands.

When an AC unit works properly, condensed water is dealt with via the unit’s built-in drainage system. If yours is leaking, that means there’s a problem that must be addressed—it’s not going to fix itself.

Fortunately, you can get a lot of mileage out of learning why many of these issues occur, as well as how to address them and when it’s time to call in the professionals.

Common Causes of Leaky Cooling Systems

Damaged/Missing Collector Pan

An AC unit’s collector pan sits underneath its evaporator with the sole job of catching condensation as it drips down from the coil. If it’s missing or damaged, it won’t be able to perform this crucial task.

Blocked Drain Line

The drainage system of an AC is a perfect breeding ground for algae, mold and other undesirables to propagate and eventually make their way into your indoor air. You can get a blocked drain line going once again by suctioning it out with a wet/dry vacuum and then flushing the line with a 50/50 bleach/water solution.

Clogged Air Filter

An AC’s air filter can become clogged rather easily, which can result in airflow slowing down and the coil icing up. This extra water will eventually melt and collect below, overflowing the collector pan. Looking to solve the problem? A clean filter is usually all that it takes.

Failed Condensation Pump

There are a number of AC units that utilize motorized pumps to deliver condensation outside the home. If the pump fails, condensation will back up inevitably. This issue must be dealt with by a home performance professional.

Low Refrigerant Levels

Have you noticed a pool of water flooding around your air handler? Is your AC hissing or simply not cooling properly? You may have a leak in your refrigerant lines, which is a potentially dangerous problem that should always be dealt with by a trained professional.
