Fall is the perfect time of the year to focus on improving home performance, and there are a number of ways to go about doing so. One of the best places to pay attention to is your attic, which often tends to get overlooked around this time of year.
Many people don’t realize that the attic is actually one of the most important areas of the home to look towards when trying to create a comfortable, efficient home environment.
Energy efficiency and your attic are connected at the hip, and if space isn’t properly insulated and air sealing, you can expect to lose quite a bit of comfort and energy this winter.
Even though temperatures in El Dorado Hills and associated areas tend to be relatively mild during the cooler months of the year, there are a number of things you can do to ensure that your attic is prepared for whatever the winter may bring.
Here are a few tips to help point you in the direction of a more efficient attic.
Investigate Attic Insulation
The insulation in your attic will play a huge role in the tightness and efficiency of the space. The best way to survey the health of your attic is to call in a professional, but there are certain things that you can do on your own to ensure that your attic’s insulation levels are on-point. In order to safely conduct an inspection, you’ll need a tape measure and flashlight at the very least, as well as protection for your face/eyes and potentially a set of boards to walk upon.
The first step is to conduct a visual check, during which you should hopefully see enough insulation to completely cover the attic floor joists.
If you notice that levels are below or even with the floor joists, you likely need to boost your insulation. Sometimes, however, a visual inspection isn’t enough to get the information you’re looking for, in which case it’s time to break out the tape measure.
Before inspecting your attic insulation with a tape measure, be sure that it isn’t made out of vermiculite.
This is a pea-sized material that is flaky and gray in color—it contains asbestos and should never be disturbed.
If you’re 100% sure that you’re not dealing with vermiculite insulation, you can either check the batts for thermal resistance markings (R-value) or calculate R-value by measuring depth in inches with your tape measure.
Boosting Insulation with CES
In California, an R-value of R49—R60 is recommended in order to ensure that your attic is properly dealing with the winter weather. We can help to determine your exact needs, developing a plan that both fits your budget and will result in a more comfortable, safer and energy-efficient home environment for you and your family.
